Our #1 priority is to prevent or work diligently to eliminate any pain your pet may experience. Pain is an awful thing, but pain relief is wonderful! Preventing and managing pain plays a critical role in the quality and compassionate patient care we provide daily at Aboite Animal Hospital. Pain management in dogs and cats has undergone a dramatic evolution in the past decade. Current approaches focus on anticipation and prevention of pain before it ever has a chance to develop, called “Preemptive Pain Management.”
We consider pain to be the 4th vital sign --- after temperature, pulse, and respiration. Untreated pain decreases quality of life in all patients and prolongs recovery from surgery, injury, or illness; plus increases the chance of complications. Inadequate pain prevention or management can lead to “Wind-up Pain” which is an increased degree of severity of pain as well as a prolonged pain state. We therefore also utilize “Multimodal Analgesia” which is the use of more than one drug with different actions, given prior to a surgical or dental procedure to produce optimal pain relief for your pet.
Our veterinary team makes every effort to recognize, assess, prevent and treat any pain issue your pet may encounter. Whether it be the chronic pain of osteoarthritis, the acute pain of trauma, or a surgical procedure, we will make sure your pet receives the appropriate analgesic medications and/or laser therapy to relieve that pain in order to ensure quality of life.
Preventing risk factors early in life reduces the development of pain later in life. For example, providing lifelong dental care reduces the development of oral pain, and preventing obesity reduces the incidence and severity of osteoarthritis.
